The Status of Female Doctors in Korean Health Institutions

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the status of female doctors in Korean health institutions. This study first reviews the status of female doctor, particularly Korean female doctors historically. And then, this study investigates how is the status of Korean female doctor through statistics. Also, the socio-economic status of female doctors is compared with that of male doctors through surveys. The data were collected in general hospitals and university hospitals, Pusan and Seoul. In survey, 311 doctors reported the questionnaires.
Several crucial findings in this study regarding the status of female doctors in Korean health institution are as follows. First, the status of female doctors is lower than that of male doctors in Korean health institution now and the past days. Second, Gender typing is prominent in departments, especially in surgery, and in hospital directorships. Third, Male doctors hold higher positions such as chiefs of staff (4.3 times), hospital vice directorships, and faculty chiefs, among others. Fourth, Female doctors in hospitals receive relatively lower incomes compared with male doctors, even though a larger proportion of them work in hospitals.
